Tailevu/ Naitasiri under 17 team created history when they won the inaugural Southern Zone Vodafone National under 17 League defeating Rewa 2-1 in the second and final leg last Sunday at Fiji Football Academy Ground in Vatuwaqa.
The Baby Tigers needed to score three clear goals to win after they went down 2-0 in the first leg under the home and away rules.
Tailevu Naitasiri coach Elvis Goundar was overjoyed with the victory.
“I am really happy to today as all our sacrifice paid off,”Goundar said.
“We came in to the competition with a mission and today it had been full filled.”
The Vunimono High School teacher thanked his players for the hard work and determination they showed during the competition.
“I salute my boys for the sacrifice they have done to achieve the victory today.”
Goundar said the boys sacrificed their school holidays to give back something to the fans of Tailevu Naitasiri.
“I must thank the parents of the players for allowing their kids to play for Tailevu/ Naitasiri.
He thanked Fiji Football Association for fully funding and assisting in the Vodafone National under 17 League.
“I must thank Fiji FA for the initiative in organising the league for Under 17 boys which shows the development is taking its shape.
He said they could see some of the potential players from this team who could join the Under 19 and also senior team next season.
The development work in Tailevu Naitasiri he said was the priority for the officials.
“Our under 17 Girls teams is also doing good in the Vodafone under 17 Girls National League as we can see a bright future for us.”
He said the boys would be treated for their hard work in a big way with the prize money of $500 and pop up from our officials.
The Vodafone under 17 National League is fully funded by Fiji Football Association where the districts receive equipment and all the cost from Fiji FA with players allowance as well.
