The Rewa Football Club received a major boost today for the OFC Champions League campaign with Pacific Direct Line (PDL) pouring in $75,000 to cater for the team’s expenses in Tahiti.
Part of the deal includes looking after the team’s accommodation and meal expenses during the tenure of the regional tournament.
Rewa FC President Nazeel Buksh said the sponsorship will help ease the financial burden off the association and the timely boost will help further in their preparations.
“As you know this is the first time we are participating in the OFC Champions League and we want to make it special for us. We want to do well, meaning qualifying to the semifinals and winning this championship.”
“We will not be there to be just part of the competition but actually want to break the duck that none of the Fiji teams have been able to win it before, and we want to prove it wrong that a team from Fiji can actually go ahead and win.”
“We have been doing a lot of preparation and the team has been training for the past two and half months. We have recruited players in positions where we lacked and we have brought in three players from Brazil, one from Japan and we have also brought in Samuela Kautoga, Vuniuci Tikoimaimereke and Madhavan Goundar to strengthen our team.”
He added that the inclusion of experienced coaches Gurjit Singh and Tagi Vonolagi to their coaching panel should further assist the team.
“Gurjit Singh is our technical advisor and forwards coach while Tagi is our goalkeeper and fitness coach. Both of them are helping Marika to identify the weak areas in the team and they are working hard to work on those weaknesses and get the team ready for OFC Champions League.”
“We are building a team which is not going to Tahiti to make up the numbers but to make a real impact on the international stage.”
Buksh also revealed that they will be playing warm up matches in New Zealand before the OFC Champions League and thanked sponsors in New Zealand who are funding the trip.
The Delta Tigers will play Auckland City FC on March 1, Western United on March 4 and Waitakere United on March 8 before leaving for Tahiti on 9th March.
Rewa is grouped with Marist FC of the Solomon Islands, Erakor Golden Star of Vanuatu and AS Tefana of Tahiti in Group D and faces Marist in its opening match at Stade Pater on March 11.
