New format suits better for Fiji teams – Yusuf

Fiji Football Association has welcomed Oceania Football Confederations decision to include quarter-finals round in the OFC Champions League this season.
In previous years, there were no quarter-finals and only the pool winner from every pool made it to the next stage.
However, top two teams from each of the four pools will make it to the first knockout round this year.
Fiji FA Chief Executive Mohammed Yusuf says, this is great news for the Fiji teams of Ba and Lautoka.
“For the first time ever, the OFC Executive Committee, where our President Mr. Rajesh Patel is the Vice-President, has decided that there will be quarter-finals this time around. This gives our teams a better chance to qualify to the next stage and challenge the bigger names.”
Ba, which have played in the competition ten times has struggled to make it to the semi-finals having last reached the knock-out stage in 2015 where they lost 2-nil to New Zealand’s Team Wellington.
That is the last time a team from Fiji topped its pool and reached the semi-finals stage.
