Fiji football chases women’s team ranking

Fiji Football Association wants to see the Fiji women’s football team ranked in the FIFA rankings.
Chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said at the moment Fiji women’s team was unranked.
“At the moment Fiji women’s football is unranked in Oceania, only seven teams are ranked which are New Zealand, Tahiti, Tonga, Cook Islands, Samoa, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea,” said Yusuf.
“The other four countries Fiji, Vanuatu, American Samoa and Solomon Islands are unranked because we have not been playing competitions under OFC previous years,”
Yusuf said the OFC National Cup Qualifiers was a huge challenge for the girls.
“This is a big challenge for the girls to step up and ensure Fiji qualifies for the OFC Nations Cup in November in New Caledonia.”
Yusuf said all three other teams had prepared well for the tournament.
“All teams have prepared well for the tournament as we can see American Samoa has recruited some of the Samoans playing in America with dual passport and they will be strong as well because American football is one of best in terms of involvement of young girls, “said Yusuf.
“We gave away gold to Vanuatu in the Mini Pacific Games last year where we lost 1-2 in settled for the Silver, so we expect a lot of entertaining and competitive tournament in Lautoka.
The OFC Nations Cup Qualifiers kicks off at Churchill Park in Lautoka this Friday with American Samoa taking on Solomon Islands at 12pm while Fiji will face Vanuatu at 3pm.
