About twenty Futsal coaches and players are taking part in a week-long FIFA/OFC Futsal Coaching Course at the Fiji Football Association Headquarters in Vatuwaqa.
OFC Futsal Development Officer, Paul Toohey, who is conducting the course says the aim of this course is to provide candidates with an understanding of the techniques and skills related to the game of Futsal.
“This course will help candidates organise and deliver basic Futsal practices. It will also provide candidates with an introduction to the structure of the game, the laws and the role Futsal can play in developing underlying skills and techniques,”Toohey said.
He said there were some new and experienced coaches that had come together to take their knowledge to a new level.
“I think in Fiji there are lot of passionate people who are eager to learn and take futsal to another level as we can see there are some young and some experience players participating,”.
He said there was a dream here in Fiji that the national team to feature in the FIFA Futsal World Cup.
“I think it is a realistic dream as there is lot passion for the game here.”
Toohey said inclusion of current and former futsal players was very much appreciated.
“We want them not to do just coaching course but to go back and work with the players which is the key.”
He said the coaching course was great but what happens next is always important.
“These are the leaders and mentors who can pass on the knowledge to players.”
Toohey believes to full fill the dream of playing in the FIFA Futsal World Cup could be achieved with increase in the futsal activities.
“I think Fiji should have a national futsal league which will be a way forward to challenge Solomon Islands and New Zealand and be on top of the OFC competition.”
