Grassroots Football Continues to Shape the Future of the Game
As Fiji joins the global football family in celebrating World Football Week, the Fiji Football Association reaffirms its commitment to growing the game from the grassroots level and creating opportunities for young footballers across the country.
Football in Fiji continues to thrive through structured development pathways that allow boys and girls to participate, compete, and develop their skills from an early age. Through its grassroots and youth competitions, Fiji Football is building a strong foundation for the sport’s future.
Fiji FA Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Yusuf said grassroots football remains one of the association’s highest priorities.
“Development at the grassroots level is essential for the long-term success of football in Fiji. Our focus is to provide opportunities for children throughout the country to learn, play, and enjoy football while also creating pathways towards elite competition.”
Fiji Football currently supports football development through its three football academies, which continue to nurture young talent and provide quality coaching and player development opportunities for aspiring footballers.
The association also continues to strengthen youth football through competitions such as the McDonald’s League, the Under-17 Boys and Girls League, and the Under-19 Boys and Girls League, all designed to provide regular competitive football for young players.
At the school’s level, Fiji Football works closely with stakeholders to organise major national competitions, including the Primary Schools Championship and the Secondary Schools Championship, which continue to attract strong participation from schools across the country.
Futsal development has also become an important part of Fiji Football’s growth strategy, with the successful staging of the Secondary Schools Girls and Boys Futsal Championship, providing another platform for students to develop their skills and passion for the game.
As part of World Football Week celebrations, Fiji Football proudly supports FIFA and the World Health Organization’s global “Be Active” campaign, encouraging children to stay active through football and physical activity. The campaign promotes at least 60 minutes of daily activity for children to help build healthier lifestyles, improve wellbeing, and encourage positive habits through sport.
Through football, children are able to strengthen their physical fitness, improve heart and lung health, build confidence, develop friendships, and support their mental wellbeing. Fiji Football continues to encourage young people across the country to embrace the campaign message of “Play. Move. Have Fun!” by participating in football activities at school, in communities, and within organised competitions.
Fiji Football also remains committed to ensuring football is inclusive and accessible to everyone through programmes and activities that support women’s football, girls-only participation, futsal, and opportunities for players of all abilities and age groups.
World Football Week serves as a reminder of football’s unique ability to unite communities, promote healthy lifestyles, and inspire future generations. Across Fiji, football continues to bring together people of all backgrounds through a shared love for the game.
Fiji Football acknowledges the dedication of coaches, referees, volunteers, teachers, parents, administrators, and supporters who continue to contribute towards the development of football throughout the nation.
Fiji Football wishes everyone a memorable and inspiring World Football Week as the nation continues to celebrate the beautiful game.
