It’s that time of the year again when two footballing giants will go head to head to decide who the champions of Fijian football are.
2017 National League champions Lautoka and 2016 Inter District Championship winners Labasa will battle it out in this year’s Pillay’s Garments Champion versus Champions Series.
Lautoka, having won the 2017 IDC title and having played two international club friendlies against New Zealand’s Team Wellington go into the series as favorites.
The Blues played 28 ninety-minute matches in 2017 and lost only two of them. They were against Suva (Fiji FACT Pool Stage) and loss to Nadi on penalty kicks (Battle of the Giants semi-final).
Lautoka won the National League title having completed the 14-round matches undefeated and recording only one draw (against Rakiraki).
Labasa on the other hand will come into the series with an underdogs tag. The northerners failed to impress in 2017 as they could not win any major tournament.
However, fans of the Babasiga Lions are aware what their team is capable of and Lautoka will have be very cautious when the series kicks off.
The northerners have the advantage of hosting the first leg at Subrail Park and will want a victory at home and go into the return leg with an upper hand.
Crowd support may play a pivotal part in determining the CVC winner this time around, as seen in previous years.
The first leg will be played on Saturday (6th January) at 3pm at Subrail Park.
The return leg will be hosted by Lautoka at Churchill Park on Friday (12th January at 7pm.)
