The 2017 Vodafone Fiji Primary Schools Football Championship kick-started following the official opening ceremony at Prince Charles Park in Nadi last Tuesday.
The tournament has entered its 42nd edition since its inception in 1975.
Fiji Primary Schools Football Association president Ami Chand said the launching done recently set a good platform and now they are here to proceed with the tournament.
“We are also very much indebted to our sponsor Vodafone who has come in at the right time to support this tournament through financial support.
“Apart from the sponsorship of $25,000.00, Vodafone has also sponsored jerseys for all under 14, 12 and girls teams.
Chand also mentioned how the sponsorship money would be used.
“For your information this year is the second year where we have included girl’s teams in our Fiji Primary Event.
“Close to ten thousand dollars of this sponsorship will be given to the districts in term of preparation grant, rebate and prize money.
Vodafone Fiji Head of Enterprise Development Antonio Kitione said the true reflection of their passion and commitment for the sport can be seen in their bid to firm-up the foundation of football by support to the grass root level of football in the country
“Today, as we officially open the 2017 Vodafone Primary School’s Football Championship, I reiterate the importance of training and exposure for the young players to foster growth of future stars in football for Fiji.
“This year we have already boosted the morale of our youngsters by providing them with new playing jerseys for the Vodafone Primary School’s Football Championship this year.”
The three-day tournament will conclude today.
