Xavier joins Fiji FA
The Vodafone National Football team will soon be boosted with a new goalkeeper coach.
Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf confirmed that France based Xavier Henneuse will be arriving into the country this Friday to take up the post.
He said the Association decided on this move after analyzing the past 13 international matches played since 2017.
“Xavier will be bringing along his experiences from France to boost the goalkeepers in Fiji, ”Yusuf said.
“After analyzing the past 13 international games from last year, we conceded goals because of the blunders by our goalkeepers and thus we need an expertise to guide our goalkeepers,” he said.
The CEO confirmed Xavier will be coming at a cost.
Head Coach Christophe Gamel echoed similar sentiments.
“We have lost some games because of goalkeeping errors, and this is why I have requested for a goalkeeper coach,” Gamel said.
“We need a good evolution goalkeeper coach and that is the only way to improve goalkeeping position in Fiji.
“His mission will be interesting as we will train our goalkeepers and also scout a good goalkeeper coach and train him for the future to train goalkeepers.”
Gamel says a good goalkeeper will be someone who can fit in this modern philosophy of European football.
“When you rebuild and start from the back, the first striker is the goalkeeper and they play very vital role in every match,” Gamel said.
“Our goalkeepers mostly don’t take good options and we lose possession and in every match taking possession in very important and that what we want our goalkeepers to learn.”
Meanwhile, Gamel has named five goalkeepers in his extended squad in preparation for the Philippines tour; Benito Waqavou (Rewa), Josaia Ratu (Ba), Akuila Mateisuva (Labasa), Waisake Ravuiwasa (Lami) and Simione Tamanisau (Suva).
