Speaking during the official presentation of the 23-member squad, Yusuf said the players had earned their places after progressing through trials and talent-identification programmes conducted around the country.
“These 23 girls have come through a series of trials and talent identification around the country, and the coaches have decided that you are the best to represent Fiji,” he said.
“This is your chance to qualify and play at the FIFA World Cup. It is the biggest stage that any player can dream of.”
Yusuf reminded the players of Fiji’s historic appearance at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia in 2024, saying it proved that young Fijian women could reach football’s biggest stage.
“We have gone through this path before when our Under-19 women qualified and later travelled to Colombia to play at the FIFA World Cup,” he said.
“When you believe in yourself and believe in God, nothing can stop you.”
Yusuf also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the players’ parents and families.
“Without you, there would be no Mini Kulas here. These girls are wearing the national uniform because of your support, love and pride for the country,” he said.
He urged the players to trust the coaching staff, remain disciplined and take pride in representing their families, communities and country.
“You are not only representing your family. You are representing your village, your community and this nation we call Fiji,” he said.
“Listen to your coaches, play hard, play strong and play for Fiji.”
Fiji will face the Cook Islands on September 6, New Zealand on September 9 and host Solomon Islands on September 12.
The two finalists at the OFC U-16 Women’s Championship will qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2027.
