Fiji U-17 gears up for China International Tournament

The Vodafone Fiji National under 17 team will be participating at the fourth China (Shanghai) International Youth Football Invitational Tournament 2018 next month.
This was revealed during the official handing over of the invitation from Poseidon Finance and Fast Jet Rentals vice president Petrol Zhang to Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf last Friday in Suva.
Zhang said that Poseidon Finance and Fast Jet Rentals was excited to announce that the talented Fijian U-17 team had been invited to compete in the fourth China (Shanghai) International Youth Football Invitational Tournament 2018.
“The tournament has been held annually at Shanghai for four years, and this is the first time that a Fijian team will be attending,” said Zhang.
“Not only do we at Poseidon and Fast Jet see this as a sign of the ever-deepening relation between Fiji and China, moreover, it is the opportunity for Fijian teenagers to see the world, and for the world to see us,”.
She said the team was personally introduced and pitched to Shanghai officials by Edia Guo, Poseidon Finance and Fast Jet’s chairman and CEO himself.
“Our young athletes will be competing with more than 400 under sixteen to seventeen years old players from all over the world.
“They will be facing teams with home advantages like China, but also European and Asian teams from countries who love football like a religion.”
“We are both thrilled and anxious, and we wish them the best of luck. We believe they will be bringing Fijian warmth and vigour and sportsmanship to China, and bringing us pride back no matter what,” said Zhang.
Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said Fiji FA was delighted to come up to partner with Poseidon Finance and Fast Jet Rentals to ensure that our Vodafone National U16 side which was preparing the OFC Championship to get exposure playing overseas.
“We were fortunate to get the invitation from the China (Shanghai) International Youth Football organizing committee which is made through this organisation,”said Yusuf.
Yusuf said Fiji FA was looking ways of sending our boys for exposure and build-up matches overseas.
“Initially this invite came from the chief executive officer of this company that they would like to see Fiji U17 take part in this very strong tournament in Shanghai.
“This tournament will enter in its fourth year and some of the great countries like Morocco, Ghana and all that have taken part in it.
Yusuf confirmed that Fiji would play in the competition as Fiji Regional Academy side.
“The team had been in camp from mid-April under national coach Christophe Gamel and Yogendra Dutt.”
Yusuf said Fiji FA would like to continue partnership with this great company in future.
“Not only have the boy’s but we wanted to expose our women team as well.”
“Fiji FA will dig deep in its pocket to ensure our national teams get all the exposure needed before any major championship as we are going to Shanghai for this U17 tournament, ’said Yusuf.
Yusuf confirmed the team would fly out on July 5 and return on July 15.
“Fiji FA is only paying the airfares to Shanghai and the other internal cost is taken up by this internal partnership arrangement. Fiji FA is delighted in this partnership with the company.”
Yusuf thanked Posiedon Finance for the assistance and added that playing in such tournament would be a great exposure for the young players as they would play against other overseas teams.
