The Ba football side has taken the lead in the 2016 Vodafone Premier League after a 2-1 win against Suva in a thrilling Vodafone Premier League fixture at Nausori’s Ratu Cakobau Park on Sunday.
The win ends Suva’s unbeaten run in the competition and pushes the Men In Black to the top of the standings.
Ba opened its account in the 3rd minute of play through Saula Waqa but Suva managed to level scores in the 41st minute via a Filipe Baravilala free kick which rocketed into the top right hand end of the Ba net giving goalkeeper Misiwani Nairube no chance at all.
The teams rested 1-1 at the break and the second half proved to be exciting as both teams launched attacks on each other’s goalmouth.
Suva’s Setareki Hughes and Sahil Dave missed two good chances while Maviliko Nakama and Saula Waqa were denied on three occasions by goalie Emori Ragata.
Ba found the net in the 80th minute through Malakai Tiwa but the goal was disallowed by the match officials as he used the assistance of his hand to score. Tiwa was also booked for the offence.
With less than three minutes remaining, Ba launched an attack through a counter-attack and a mis-clearance by Epeli Lairoti allowed Meli Codro to send in a low cross delivery which was mistimed by Suva’s last line of defence and Nabenia was in the right spot and at the right time to drive home the advantage.
Ba now has 16 points from 7 matches while Suva is on 13 points after playing 6 matches.
Ba coach Imdad Ali said: “We came simply to win the game. Ba has played so many games and we have some worn out players and we are trying to include some young players to uplift the standard.”
“The players played according to the game plan. Samuela is a good player and he was good today (yesterday).”
Suva coach Gurjit Singh said playing two matches was tough for his side.
“We played two top teams.
“There are four players who have moved to other districts and it has affected the team. New players are coming up and after few more games they will be good,” he said.
“Pita was injured during the game.”
Meanwhile Suva and Lautoka played to a 1-1 draw in the Vodafone Premier League fixture on Friday.
