Ba on track at OFC Champions League

Striker Saula Waqa scored a superb goal in the second half as Fijian champions Ba FC beat Cook Islands champion club Puiakura FC 1-0 in a fast paced Group B encounter of the 2017 OFC Champions League at Stade Yoshida in Koné.

Ba applied continuous pressure in the first half but the Puaikura side stood tall in defence to hold them.

Waqa slammed in the winner in the 81st hotel minute after some work on the left flank by Meli Codro. Waqa raced into the box and beautifully slot in the ball past diving Puaikura goalkeeper Lij

The Imdad Ali coach side sit with four points after two matches and need a win against Team Wellington in their final pool match on Saturday.

Ali said he was confident that his boys would win the match tonight.

“Really I knew we will be going to win this match,” Ali said.

He said he knew the Cook Islanders would play defensive football but he had his game plan.

“Actually I had in mind that they will probably be playing little bit defensive football and they started off but I think during the game they came out of it which was good for us to play little more football.”

“We did our best but I think we have missed so many good opportunities for scoring and if we would put it in we would have won with better goal margin,”Ali said.

The former national and Ba rep said they came in for a win and he was happy.

“We came in this match to get the three points and Iam happy that we did it.”

“The boys really played well, the defensive part was pretty good and the goalkeeper was not even tested”

Ali believe it will be a different story with Team Wellington in the last match.

“We have watched their match and seen the strength and weakness of them and will go back to the drawing board and work on our mistakes and plan to counter them.

Meanwhile Team Wellington of New Zealand has taken the lead in the group after outclassing host side Heinghene Sport 2-1.

Ba faces Team Wellington in its next match at 6pm (Fiji Time) on Saturday.
