Suva registers first league win in round two

The Suva Football side registered its first win in the second round of the Vodafone Premier League defeating Tavua 3-0 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Sunday.

Suva started the match under the guidance of their new coach Kamal Swamy with more organized and constructive style of play which saw the Capital City scored three goals in the first half.

Iosefo Verevou would have put Suva into an early lead in the 10th minute of play after Tavua goalkeeper Varinava Telawa fouled striker Epeli Leiroti in the box, Verevou’s shot from the penalty spot went wide.

The side kept pressure on the Tavua defense which led an own goal in the 13th minute.

Leiroti got Suva’s goal in the 43rd minute after he walked his way from the right flank beating Tavua defense and taking a powerful shot pass goalkeeper Telawa while just before the break Suva was awarded another penalty after a Tavua player handled the ball in the box. Filipe Baravilala stood up this time and didn’t make any mistake but extended Suva’s lead 3-0 at halftime break.

Tavua came out strong in the second half with more opportunities but lack of finishing and strong defense by Suva denied those goals.

Swamy admitted the players lost concentration in the second half.

“We played well in the first half but some players thought they could work alone and not work as a team and we lost possession and that was our failure in the second half, “said Swamy.

He said Suva was a good team but needed some improvements to achieve their goal.

“Suva is a very good side and we missed seven key players today but I am happy with the 3 points but will go back on the drawing board and iron out our mistakes.”

“We are playing Ba in our next match and we know how strong Ba is so we need to work on our mistakes before taking on Ba on Sunday, “said Swamy.

Tavua coach Nazeel Ali despite the loss his players made a good start in the second half but were unfortunate to score.

“The score line does not reflect the way we have played, I think we could have scored some goals in second half but poor finishing let us down but we will go back and work on our finishing and come out prepared against Nadi this weekend.

Meanwhile Ba leads the VPL points table with 21 points while Lautoka is on second spot with 13 points and Suva on third with 12 points.

The Ba vs Suva match will be held at FFA Academy Ground in Ba at 3pm this Sunday.

At the same time Nadi will host Tavua at Prince Charles Park in Nadi at same time on Sunday.
