Shankar will lead Fiji in the regional championship, which serves as the Oceania qualifier for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, while Nasinu FC midfielder Maikah Dau has been named vice-captain.
Speaking to Fiji FA Media, Shankar said being entrusted with the captaincy of the national side was a proud moment in his young football career.
“It is a proud moment for me and my family to be given the opportunity to captain Fiji,” Shankar said.
“Leading your country is a big responsibility and I am thankful to the coaches for putting their trust in me.
“I will do my best to lead by example and help the boys because we all have one goal, which is to perform well and make Fiji proud.”
Shankar has already gained valuable experience at a higher level after being part of Bula FC in the OFC Pro League.
“Being with Bula FC was a good learning experience for me. I learnt a lot being around different players and coaches and I believe those experiences will help me in Samoa,” he said.
Shankar said he and Dau would work together to keep the Junior Bula Boys focused throughout the tournament.
“Maikah is a good player and we will work together to keep the boys motivated and focused.
“We know the tournament will be tough but we believe in ourselves. We have prepared well and now we have to go out there, give our best and fight for Fiji.”
