Fiji national football team assistant coach Marika Rodu has highlighted the importance of introducing regular grassroots football programmes for children aged six to 10.
During his presentation at the Fiji FA Coaches Workshop in Suva, Rodu outlined the need for districts to establish weekly football activities to develop technical skills and game understanding from an early age.
The presentation identified a shortage of grassroots programmes, coaches and volunteers as major challenges facing football development.
Rewa’s Red Kajikaji programme, held every Saturday morning, was highlighted as an example other districts could follow.
Rodu’s presentation also outlined plans to revive the Mom and Pop League, encouraging parents to participate alongside their children in football activities.
The initiative would cater for boys and girls aged six to 10, using local grounds, schools and community facilities.
The workshop stressed that regular grassroots activities were essential to developing technically stronger players for Fiji’s future national teams.
