Districts urged to take ownership of women’s football

Fiji Football Association vice-president Mere Veikata has highlighted the need for district associations to take greater responsibility for developing women’s football.

During the Fiji FA Districts and Clubs Technical Workshop in Suva, Viekata’s presentation focused on improving women’s league standards, player development and district accountability.

The presentation identified inadequate player numbers, inconsistent training and limited competitive matches as major challenges affecting women’s football.

It also highlighted concerns over young national representatives entering international competitions without sufficient domestic match experience.

Districts were urged to provide proper coaching, equipment, transport, facilities and management support for their women’s teams.

The workshop stressed that registering a women’s team alone was not enough, with clubs expected to demonstrate genuine commitment to player development and competition participation.

The presentation also highlighted that active women’s teams form part of club licensing requirements, with non-compliance potentially affecting men’s league eligibility.

Fiji FA’s five-year Women’s Football Strategy is nearing completion and will focus on participation, development pathways, competition standards and district accountability.
