Fiji women’s team beats Singapore 3-1

The Vodafone Fiji women’s football team started its campaign in the Tri-nations FIFA Women’s International Friendlies on a high note beating Singapore 3-1 at Korman Stadium in Vanuatu last night.

The Marika Rodu coached side took an early lead with a goal from Cema Nasau while Singapore managed to equalize in the dying stages of the match to level 1-1.

Midway into the second half midfielder Luisa Tamanitoakula extended Fiji’s lead with a powerful shot past Singapore goalkeeper.

Tamanitoakula sealed Fiji’s 3-1 victory win via a penalty in the 91st minute of play.

Rodu said the players lacked laxity in the first half.

“It was a game of two half I believe because we didn’t played the way we wanted as the rhythm of our game was not as we planned,”

“An early goal may have contributed to player’s laxity in the first half as most of the senior players took their foot off the accelerator and the rhythm started to drop,”Rodu said

Rodu said he was happy with the second half performance of the team.

“In the second half we changed the momentum and were more aggressive in our attack and combined very well to put pressure on Singapore defense and that was how we managed to score two other goals,”Rodu said.

Rodu said if they had continued playing with the way they started would have been different result.

“If the girls continued with the same rhythm and momentum of the game the end result would have been different,”

“We will go back to the drawing board and iron out our mistakes before coming against Vanuatu on Monday.”
