Fiji men’s football team aims to end 16- year drought

The Vodafone Fiji men’s football team is aiming to end its sixteen year drought by winning gold medal at this year’s Pacific Games in Samoa.

Fiji last won the gold medal in football in 2003.

Coach Christophe Gamel said there was spirit in the team to win this year.

“The spirit is there, they all have worked hard and sacrificed a lot,” said Gamel

“We are against the big teams but there is no pressure as we need to win gold after 16 years,”

Gamel said the boys had to play their role now.

“The boys have to play their roles as we have a plan to reach the final,”

“We have a mixture of young and experience players and I am sure they will do their best,”

The Roy Krishna captained side defeated Tahiti in its opening match yesterday.

Fiji’s second match will be against American Samoa on Wednesday July 10 at 9am.

The Christophe Gamel coach side will face defending champions New Caledonia in its third match at 12pm on Friday July 12.

On Monday July 15, the Bula Boys will face Tuvalu at 2pm. Fiji will play Solomon Islands in their last pool match on Thursday July 18 at 6pm.

The finals will be played on Saturday July 20.

Meanwhile Fiji FA president has promised $1000 incentive to each player if they win gold medal for the country for both men and women team.
