Fiji to host Oceania futsal battle

Fiji Football Association chief executive officer Bob Kumar said the championship would be played at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala Bay, Suva.
“Yes now I can confirm that we will be hosting the OFC Futsal Championship in Suva from February 8 to 13, 2016,” he said.
The tournament was initially to be played in Tahiti but they have pulled out.
With the winner gaining direct entry to the next Futsal World Cup in Columbia, support of home fans could play the X-factor role in helping the Intiaz Khan-coached national futsal side against the highly rated opponents like Kurukuru from Solomon Islands and the Futsal Whites from New Zealand.
Kumar said the Vodafone national futsal team have been preparing well for the championship.
“The team will be going for a tour to New Zealand and will play against Futsal Whites in the Trans Pacific Futsal Cup 2015.
“The side will also play Waikato Bay of Plenty, Auckland Futsal Federation and New Caledonia’s top club FC Ferrand.
Kumar said the New Zealand/ Fiji Football Association would be paying the national futsal team’s accommodation and food expenses during the six-match tour. He said Fiji FA was saving about $21, 000 (NZ $15, 000).
“Our New Zealand/Fiji Football Association counterpart will be looking after the players’ meals and accommodation. That is the partnership we have with NZFFA,” he said.
Fiji have hosted the championship for four times since its inauguration in 1992 in which Fiji have been runners-up three times
Fiji first featured in the final against Australia in 2000 at Port Vila, Vanuatu and in 2009 and 2010 in Fiji.
