Germany U20 Coach Plans Fiji Visit

The former Hertha Berlin and SC Freiburg defender is determined to see his side top Group F that also contains Honduras and Uzbekistan.#”It seems that we are favourites in this group and we need to do our homework on these teams.#I will go to the Fiji Islands for two to three weeks to observe the islands, I think it would be nice there.#”I have no experience of Fiji football or the Fiji Islands itself but we must start as favourite in this group,” Wormuth said.#The 54-year-old Wormuth boasts a talent laden team with most of his players coming from storied clubs such as VfL Wolfsburg, Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica.#With such pedigree combined with the senior men’s team’s triumph at last year’s FIFA World Cup™, there is no shortage of self-belief in the German camp.#”Of course, in this sort of tournament it is normal for us to have good self-confidence.#”When you start with a good team like Fiji then normally we have to win.#”But the other teams are good enough to beat us so in the tournament we will see what happens,” he says.#Wormuth, whose coaching career included spells with SC Pfullendorf, SSV Reutlingen, 1. FC Union Berlin and VfR Aalen, says living up to expectations as a coach following Germany’s World Cup™ triumph is difficult.#”There is stress. A lot of stress. We’re a totally different team but I understand everybody talking about the German reputation.#”We have a good talent development system and no problems with producing top players but it’s not so easy as everyone is saying to win,” he said.#Germany’s opening match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup is with Fiji at Christchurch Stadium on June 1 at 1pm local time.#Wormuth is not sure what to expect from the OFC champions but reiterated his expectation of meeting an opponent worthy of regard.#”I know Fiji is good for tourism and holidays and I have to go there to observe them and perhaps enjoy the country.#”But in terms of football we respect everybody we play against and our aim is to enjoy that first game. But we are Germany and we want to win,” he said.#
