Newly appointed beach soccer and futsal commission chairman and Fiji FA vice president Yogeshwar Singh said talks were already underway with various parties to see this plan take shape.
Singh believes Fiji has a lot of potential to excel in beach soccer and assures that the commission will look at way to help further develop the code here.
“There are plans construct a beach soccer pitch and we will be talking with the various town and city councils to work in partnership to achieve this goal. A standard beach soccer pitch will give us the luxury to organise local competitions to see the sport reach greater heights,” Singh said.
Solomon Islands and Tahiti have qualified for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup and Singh sees no reason why we cannot do the same.
“Fiji has a lot of talent and potential to do well at the international stage. In the past we have not been able to do this because we have not had any sort of beach soccer competition to up skill the players but in time to come this will be a thing of the past.”
Singh also requests any organisation or party interested to work in partnership with Fiji FA in setting up beach soccer pitch to come forward.
Sahib tasked to develop shortened codes
Assistant Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) technical director Hussain Sahib has been given charge of the futsal and beach soccer code.
Yogeshwar Singh, the Fiji FA futsal and beach soccer commission chairman said Sahib will be tasked to work on the development of both codes.
“Hussain Sahib will oversee the development of both futsal and beach soccer. He will look at means and ways to develop coaches and players. Overall Hussain will also be in charge of both the national teams and help in their preparation,” Singh said.
Sahib guided the national futsal side to a second place finish behind overall champion Solomon Islands in the 2010 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) futsal championship which was held at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
Singh says separate registrations for the shortened codes will come into place from next season.
“There will be separate registrations for beach soccer and futsal from next season. Players who register for this will not be able to take part at district level football but only up to club level.”
The commission chairman said further details will be released in the coming weeks.
