Rewa Win Special For Goundar

Ever-improving midfielder Madhavan Goundar was one of the happiest players on the field as Rewa won its second Fiji FACT title in Nausori a week ago after beating Nadi 1-0 in the final.

The 29-year-old who hails from Rakiraki previously lifted titles in the Senior Division with his home team and Tailevu Naitasiri but Sunday’s win was incredibly special for him.

He was lost for words when approached for an interview and opted to speak in the Hindustani language.

He thanked Rewa officials and players for having faith in him and believing in his abilities.

“I want to thank Rewa officials and players for this opportunity. I joined them this year for the OFC Champions League and the journey has been great and wonderful for me so far as I have played in almost every game,” he said.

The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) officer who netted the winning penalty in the 6-5 semifinal win over Labasa said that match will remain as one of the top highlights of his playing career.

“I missed the penalty in last year’s final when I was playing for Suva and when I was given the chance to take the penalty against Labasa, I told myself that I have to prove myself. And since it was the decisive kick, there was a lot of pressure. I am a soldier and as a soldier it was my duty to fight till the end and bring victory to my team. I am happy that I did not let my team down and I want to thank my family as well for all the support they have given to me so far in my career.” He dedicated the win to his aunty (Badki-amma) who he recently lost. Goundar moved to the Premier ranks with Tailevu Naitasiri and was recruited into the Suva squad by Gurjit Singh for the 2016 OFC Champions League. Since joining the Whites, he moved from his usual sweeper’s position to midfield and has been impressive in every match that he has featured in so far and was awarded the Fairest Player of 2016 during the Fiji FA Annual Awards in March.

His good form and determination also resulted in his selection in the Vodafone national team.

Goundar made his international debut for Fiji in the friendly match on May 25 against the Solomon Islands and also got some game time in the World Cup Qualifier against New Caledonia.
