After years of battling against the odds and proudly carrying the reputation of Fiji football’s “Giant Killers,” Nasinu Football Association will head into next month’s BiC Fiji FACT in Labasa determined to chase history — winning its first-ever Fiji FACT title.
The tournament will also hold special significance for the district as Nasinu FA celebrates its 50th anniversary next month, adding even greater motivation for the players, officials, and supporters ahead of one of Fiji football’s biggest stages.
Under the leadership of President Jagindar Singh, the district has once again qualified for the prestigious tournament despite operating with limited financial resources and competing against some of the country’s football powerhouses.
Currently sitting sixth on the Extra Premier League standings with 14 points after 10 matches, Nasinu secured qualification through determination, discipline, and teamwork under Singh’s guidance.
The district has recorded four wins, two draws, and four losses this season while continuing to prove that passion and unity can still compete against bigger and wealthier opponents.
For Singh, qualification for the first major tournament of the year is already a proud achievement for the district.
“It’s a proud moment for Nasinu football,” Singh said.
“Our players have worked extremely hard throughout the season despite the challenges we continue to face as a smaller association.”
However, for Nasinu, the BiC Fiji FACT represents more than just another tournament appearance.
It is another opportunity to rewrite history.
The district has never won the prestigious Fiji FACT title, with the closest moment coming in 2002 when Nasinu reached the final against Lautoka at Churchill Park. After a thrilling contest, Nasinu suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 loss in a penalty shootout — a defeat still remembered by many loyal supporters today.
More than two decades later, the dream of lifting the Fiji FACT trophy remains alive.
“We know the history and what this tournament means to our supporters,” Singh said.
“Nasinu has never won the Fiji FACT, so the motivation is there for the players to give everything for the district. It would be very special if we could achieve something memorable during our 50th anniversary year.”
Despite the achievement of qualifying, Singh admitted the association continues to face financial difficulties compared to larger districts backed by major business houses and sponsors.
He believes stronger financial support would greatly assist the team’s preparations heading into the tournament.
“Our results may have been mixed this season, but the players continue to fight hard every week,” he said.
“With better financial support, it will surely boost the team’s morale and preparations for the Fiji FACT.”
Nasinu has long earned admiration throughout the football fraternity for its fearless performances against Fiji’s traditional giants despite operating with limited resources.
That fighting spirit has become part of the district’s identity.
“We may not have the biggest budget, but we have heart, unity, and belief,” Singh said.
“Our boys continue to give their best every week and play with pride for the district.”
The president said preparations for a major tournament come with significant expenses, including travel, accommodation, meals, logistics, and player welfare.
“As a smaller district, every bit of support makes a huge difference,” Singh said.
“We are appealing to business houses, supporters, former players, and the community to stand behind the team as we prepare for Labasa.”
Behind the scenes, Singh and his administration have continued working tirelessly to ensure players are looked after despite financial limitations. Those close to the association acknowledge the sacrifices being made to keep the team competitive throughout the season.
Supporters have praised the administration for guiding Nasinu back to the Fiji FACT despite the many challenges faced during the campaign.
Nasinu now awaits the official pool draws next Saturday before the tournament proper kicks off on June 19 at Subrail Park in Labasa.
As anticipation builds, many supporters remain hopeful the “Giant Killers” can once again rise to the occasion and perhaps create history by finally bringing home Nasinu’s first-ever Fiji FACT crown during the district’s golden jubilee celebrations.
For Jagindar Singh and the Nasinu faithful, the dream is alive — and the fight is far from over.
