Lautoka Clinch CVC Title

The General Machinery Lautoka football team won the 2017 Pillay Garments Champion versus Champion series after lapse of six years.

The Kamal Swamy coached side defeated Ba 1-0 in their first encounter on Friday and drew 0-all in their second encounter and decider at Churchill Park yesterday to lift the trophy.

Midfielder Zibraaz Sahen scored the winning goal in the first leg from the penalty spot.

Swamy made a tactical defensive pattern which paid dividends, preventing Ba from scoring.

Lautoka played a defensive game knowing they only needed a draw to win the trophy.

Defenders Kolinio Sivoki, Ilaitia Tuilau and Kavaia Rawaqa were rock solid in the last line of defence keeping the fast Ba forwards at bay.

Ba striker Saula Waqa and Samuela Nabenia with Malakai Tiwa used all tricks to break the stubborn Lautoka defensive, but to no avail.

“Lautoka defended well preventing us from scoring,” said Ba coach Imdad Ali.

“We gave everything in the game but the tough defensive pattern used by Lautoka denied us the win.”

Swamy said their aim was to improve on their defence and was happy with his players’ effort.

“We know Ba will come back firing after their first loss, so we focused on our defensive pattern which finally paid off,” he said.

Lautoka Football Association president Abdul Kadar said the win was special and dedicated the victory to all Lautoka children celebrating Palm Sunday.

Kadar thanked their sponsor, General Machinery and the families of their players for supporting the team.

“Without our sponsor, I don’t think we would be here today with the trophy. We also thank the wives of the players for their support. The wives baked on Saturday night and provided breakfast to the players this morning. This inspired the boys to do well. We dedicate this special victory to all the children in Lautoka celebrating Palm Sunday.”

Kadar said the boys would share $10,000 for the win. We will top up the $5000 prizemoney with another $5000 as incentives. I salute my boys for their effort.”

Lautoka received $5000 while Ba walked away with $2500.
