I wish mum was here, says striker

“I just wish my mum was here when I arrived home because I know she would have hugged me tightly as it was her dream for her to watch me play in the World Cup,” an emotional Hughes said.
“I missed her so much but I know she was watching me from somewhere and that gave me strength. It was hard but I kept her in my heart and always remember her words before taking the field.”
The Bua native said he knows his mum is happy with his performance from up there and I know I ‘ve made her proud as well.
The Rewa midfielder thanked all the U20 players for doing the great job at the World Cup.
“We played as a team and we won as a team. We were worked as a team despite losing our first match and that made us stronger in the second match that we won.
“Luck wasn’t on our side in the last match but I knew the whole team played well and made the country proud.
“It was a great experience and exposure for us playing with top teams of the world.”
Hughes also thanked Fijian supporters in New Zealand for praying for them.
“I also thank my family for supporting me in every way. I would also like to thank the president of Rewa Football Nazeel Buksh together with the vice- president and president of my club Nakasi Lions Pita Cecil for coming to Christchurch and supporting us.
“We were overwhelmed with their presence in our first match,” he added.
