As the FIFA U20 World Cup kicks off in Argentina this weekend, all eyes will be on the young and talented defender, Clarence Len-Lesly Suhayl Hussain, who will be representing the Digicel Fiji U20 National team. Known by his nickname “Lens,” Hussain is a promising footballer with a bright future ahead of him.
Hussain, born on July 4th, 2003, has always had a passion for football. Hailing from Savusavu, Fiji, he discovered his love for the sport at an early age and has since dedicated himself to honing his skills on the field. Standing at a height of 176cm and weighing 77kg, Hussain possesses the physical attributes necessary to excel in various positions.
The talented footballer primarily plays as a defender but can also contribute to the team as a midfielder. His versatility allows him to adapt to various roles on the pitch, showcasing his adaptability and football intelligence. His impressive performances for his district team, Labasa FC, have earned him a spot in the Digicel Fiji U20 National team.
Hussain’s football journey started with his debut for the Nasinu FC district team, and he has steadily progressed through the ranks, representing Fiji at various national levels. He has proudly worn the national jersey for the U-16, U-17, U-19, and now U-20 teams, demonstrating his commitment to representing Fiji at the highest level.
In 2018, at Fifteen-year-old and then a student in Taveuni Lens had his first national call-up when he was part of the Fijian Under-16 football team in the OFC Oceania Playoffs. He was informed of the news that he had been chosen for the national U16 squad when he was in class.
“I still have that feeling when first told of the news and it is something I will never forget. There were hardships faced along the way but it is part of life and we cannot avoid it.”
Hussain said he was drawn to the sport by his elder brother and father.
“My dad was a football player and he also coached the Taveuni team. With him and my elder brother, I developed my interest in the sport,” he said.
However, his major breakthrough was when he represented Labasa College in the Under-19 competition.
“The team managed to qualify for the finals and that was the turning point in my career as I wanted to go a step further in playing for my country.”
When asked about his favorite local player, Hussain mentions renowned Labasa defender Taniela Waqa, praising his discipline on and off the field. Waqa’s dedication and professionalism have served as an inspiration for Hussain in his own football career. On the international stage, his favorite player is Paul Pogba, whom he admires for his exceptional midfield skills and talent.
While Hussain has experienced many memorable moments in his football career, his best moment so far has been qualifying for the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The honor of representing his country on a global stage is something that fills him with pride and motivates him to perform at his best.
However, no football career is without its challenges. Hussain recalls his worst moment in football as receiving a red card before the semifinal of the U-17 World Cup qualifiers. Despite this setback, he has learned from the experience, and it has only fueled his determination to improve and succeed.
Among his toughest opponents on the field, Hussain names Toni Tuivuna, highlighting the skill and tenacity that the player possesses. Competing against strong opponents like Tuivuna pushes Hussain to constantly improve his own abilities.
As a rising star in the football world, Hussain has some valuable advice for young footballers. He encourages them to dream big, believe in themselves, and work hard to achieve their goals. Through dedication and perseverance, he believes that any aspiring footballer can.
