Women’s Futsal Trials Begin

The inaugural Digicel Fiji National Women’s Futsal team trial for southern players took place last weekend at the Fiji FA Futsal Court in Vatuwaqa, with 20 players in attendance over the two-day period.

Head coach Jerry Sam expressed gratitude for the women players’ interest in futsal, though he lamented the small turnout, especially from district representatives.

Sam emphasized the significance of the opportunity for women in futsal, whether they play in futsal leagues or district football. While he wished for more district players to participate, he acknowledged that other commitments may have kept them away.

Following the southern trials, Sam and his team will head to the west to assess players at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba. Later, on May 25-26, they will hold trials in Labasa to scout potential futsal players.

The OFC Futsal Women’s Nations World Cup qualifier is scheduled for August 18-24 in the Solomon Islands, making these trials crucial for identifying talent for the national team.

Women’s futsal is gaining traction in Fiji, with its recent introduction to secondary schools this year.
