VPL major upset

The Suva football side created major upset in the Vodafone Premier League opener defeating Champion vs Champion winners Labasa 2-1 at Subrail Park in Labasa on Saturday.

The Capital City side playing with some of the new signing like Manasa Levaci, Jonetani Buksh and Waisake Soga and under coach Babs Khan broke the hearts of many Labasa fans with attacking football.

The Babasiqa Lions took an early lead via a 26th minute goal by defender Antonio Tuivuna.

Suva were able to equalise ten minutes later when Buksh neatly walked past a couple of defenders and laid the ball into the path of Christopher Wasasala who made no mistake with his attempt.

Suva lost goalkeeper Borisi to injury and brought in Emori Ragata towards the end of the first half.

The Whites had the chance to go up in injury time after Ilisoni Loloivalu handled the ball inside his own box.

The resulting penalty by Shahil Dave was saved by goalkeeper and Captain Akuila Mateisuva as the teams rested at the break with a 1-1 draw.

Wasasala got his second and Suva’s winning goal in the 50th minute as he combined well with Buksh to walk inside the Labasa box and take a low shot which went to the right of Mateisuva.

Suva plays Ba this Sunday at ANZ Stadium in Suva while Labasa will host Navua at Subrail Park in Labasa on Saturday.
