Tavua in the top flight

The VR Builders Tavua FC is back once again in the premier division.

This is after they defeated Seaqaqa FC 2-0 in the second leg (3-2 on aggregate) of the Digicel Senior League final playoff at the Fiji FA Academy ground in Ba on Sunday.

After going down 1-2 in the first leg, the Gold Town Boys knew they needed to win by two clear goals.

The match started on a high as both teams started applying pressure straight from the kickoff while the fans continued to cheer on with the traditional drums and instruments creating another level of atmosphere.

Mosim Khan struck first in the 27th minute as he beautifully lobbed in the corner of the net from an acute angle that gave Seaqaqa goalkeeper Osea Lesinaivalu no chance at all.

Seaqaqa’s Rusiate Doidoi had a good opportunity to equalize as he beat the Tavua defense and walked in, but his shot was tapped away by goalkeeper Varinava Telawa.

Tavua led 1-0 at the breather.

Locked 2-2 on aggregate at the beginning of the second half, the Mohammed Asif Khan-coached Tavua came in with more urgency and a great combination from the midfield and strikers saw Sikeli Sagatoro booted in the second goal which gave Tavua FC the minimum goals required to seal the victory and book the ticket for the premier division.

Winning coach Khan thanked the sponsors for the continued support and the teams for a gallant performance.

“I would like to thank our sponsors VR Builders without them we would not be able to make it this far and this includes the players, officials, families and fans.

“After going down in the first leg, there was a lot of pressure on us. We came back, rectified on the mistakes and prepared well for the second leg.

“The boys were reminded to keep pressuring the opponents until they make a mistake and capitalize on it. I thank the boys for sticking to our game plan.

“Coming from senior to premier division, we know it will be tough but I have faith in my boys and we will prepare well for the new season.”

Together with the promotion to the premier division, Tavua FC walked away with the winning trophy and $6,000 prizemoney while Seaqaqa FC received $1,500.
