Sikuri to help youths

Former national, Nasinu, Suva and Rewa rep William Sikuri aims to generate interest and increase participation of youths in football by running initiatives that will inspires them to take part.

Sikuri who has joined Fiji FA as a development officer will be responsible for supporting the development of youth football across the southern division.

“Yes I am proud to be back with Fiji Football and pass my knowledge to young generation,” said Sikuri.

Sikuri said sports, play and physical education provide a forum to learn skills such as discipline, confidence and leadership.

“Things have changed now as most youths are seen playing games on mobile phones but what they do not understand is that they not getting what is needed for them to be mentally and physically fit,”

Sikuri said we need the change the mindset of the youths of today.

“During our time we had passion and love for football and we were inspired by so many gifted footballers.”

“It all began while I used travel back home from Stella Maris Primary School and while in the bus I used to admire players like Jo Tubuna, Anand Sami, Bale Raniga, Jone Nasokia, Semi Tabaiwalu and list goes on. They were training for the national team at Buckhurst Park,” said former Nasinu rep

“I used to admire them and was inspired by them but today it is different.”

Sikuri said parents played vital role in the development of their children.

“Parents are the once who can inspire their kids and view their potential of becoming an athlete and motivate them.”

He added that there are lots of talents in the country.

“We have so many talented players in Fiji but they are wasting their gift from the man above because they have their own choices,”

‘Former Fijian players like Esala Masi, Ivor Evans and Roy Krishna have inspired so many Fijian and I urge parents to support Fiji FA in the development of football in the country.
