Rewa registers first win

A last minute goal from Bruce Hughes gave Rewa its first win in the Digicel Premier League last Sunday.

The side defeated Navua 2-1 in a tough battle at Uprising Sports Center in Pacific Harbour.

Both teams were equally match but Rewa led 1-0 via a goal from Setareki Hughes. Hughes broke through from outside the penalty box, beating the Navua goalkeeper Thakur Narayan and placed the ball neatly in to the net in the 23rd minute.

Both teams had numerous opportunities to score but the defenders on either stood tall denying any goals to be scored.

Navua kept the pressure in the Rewa defense and got the equaliser just before the halftime break from the penalty spot.

Referee Eron Reddy awarded Navua a penalty after Rewa defender Kishan Sami fouled striker Suliano Doli inside the box.

Captain Vineet Chand made no mistake as he netted the goal neatly from the spot.

Both teams tried their best to get the winner but it was Rewa’s day as Hughes found the winning goal in the last minute of the game.

Rewa coach Rodeck Singh said the players have executed their job.

“We’ll have to work on some areas and learn to be disciplined,” Singh said.

“Our finishing will be vital for us moving forward and I believe we have the talent to do that. We didn’t score any goals in the last three rounds and to get it here is good.”

Navua coach Ameet Prakash said they need to work on their mistakes.

“We had a lot of goal scoring opportunities but we missed. The boys had 10 scoring chances but were reluctant to make an attempt.”

The Delta Tigers are now on fifth place with five points while Navua sits on the bottom of the Digicel Premier League points table.
