Oliver Small, the dedicated kit manager for Digicel Fiji’s U20 National Team, is the unsung hero supporting the Junior Bula Boys as they compete in the FIFA U20 World Cup in San Juan, Argentina. Despite his relative anonymity, Oliver’s vital role in ensuring the team’s smooth operations and optimal performance cannot be overlooked.

Hailing from Tailevu and currently residing in Nakasi, Nasinu, Small as he is fondly called had a passion for football that predates his role as a kit manager. He previously played for the Tanoa Levu Football Club in the Rewa Regional Local League in Fiji, later joining Rewa FC in 2010. Little did he know that his love for the game would lead him on an extraordinary journey.

At the age of 47, Oliver embarked on his inaugural flight last month to Gold Coast, Australia, and recently completed his first long-haul journey, encompassing four flights with layovers in New Zealand and Chile before reaching Argentina. This opportunity was made possible by his involvement with football. Reflecting on his experience with the Digicel Junior Bula Boys, Small expressed immense privilege and honor to be part of the team that represents Fiji at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

“I never imagined traveling abroad or boarding a plane, but I’m grateful to Fiji Football for selecting me as the kit manager for the FIFA U20 World Cup. This role has opened doors and granted me incredible opportunities. I’ve been to Gold Coast, and today I’m in Argentina with these boys—a dream come true,” shared Oliver.

As the kit manager, Oliver’s meticulous organization skills are put to good use. He ensures seamless training sessions by managing the team’s training kits, handling their laundering and folding, and providing all necessary equipment for both training and match days. His unwavering dedication stems from a profound sense of pride and camaraderie within the team.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me, and I’m doing everything in my power for the team. It fills me with pride to be part of this team, and serving them feels like being part of a family,” added Small.

Oliver’s story serves as a tribute to the often-unrecognized heroes who play pivotal roles in the success of sports teams. While players take the spotlight on the field, individuals like Oliver, with their steadfast commitment and attention to detail, ensure seamless operations behind the scenes. His remarkable journey from a football player to a kit manager representing his country on the global stage is a source of inspiration for us all.
