No third leg

The stage is all set for the two leg series of the 2020 Pillay Garments Champion vs Champion series to be played between Unique Rubber Stamp Suva and Powerwise NZ and Standard Hire Labasa side at ANZ Stadium in Suva.

Two days to go the official launch of the tournament was held at the Fiji FA Headquarters in Vatuwaqa on Monday.

Fiji FA Chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf confirmed that there would be no third leg as done in the past.

“Let me make it clear there will be no third leg if both teams tie in both matches on Friday and Sunday. If Suva and Labasa draw in the first leg and if it remains equal at the fulltime on Sunday then the match will go into an extra spell or penalty kicks to decide the winner, “said Yusuf

Previously, in such circumstances Fiji FA would organize a third match to be the decider, but this is not the case.

“The winner will be decided in the two leg series, ‘said Yusuf

Yusuf said both teams have been preparing well for the series.

“It’s a great opportunity for both teams to start the season on high note. Both teams are preparing well from early January although Labasa has somehow been affected by the recent flooding and Cyclone but they have stepped up their preparation and we have been assured by Labasa officials that they will do their best to defend their title,” said Yusuf

Yusuf said the fans could expect an exciting fixture between the 2020 Courts IDC champions Labasa and Vodafone Premier League winners Suva.

“Both teams have displayed some wonderful matches last season and for sure both will continue the same in the Pillay Garments CVC,”

“Suva has never won the CVC title since its inception in 1993 and it is a challenge for the Capital City side to end its 27 year drought while Labasa has won the series three times and are defending champions so expect fireworks explode on Friday and Sunday at ANZ Stadium in Suva, “said Yusuf

The chief executive officer also acknowledged the support of Pillay Garments for sponsoring the series for past 19 years.

“This is the 28th edition of the Champion vs Champion series and on behalf of Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel and the Board I would like to thank Narendra Pillay, the managing director of Pillay Garments for the consecutive sponsorship,” said Yusuf

“His sponsorship is worth $29,000 which includes a free uniform for both teams and Fiji FA provides preparation grant of $2500 for both teams as well traveling grant for Labasa to come and play here,” said Yusuf

He confirmed the winner of the series will get $5000 and the runner-up will receive $2500 in prizemoney with compliments of Pillay Garments.

The first leg of the series will be hosted by Labasa this Friday at 7pm while the return leg will be hosted by Suva at 3pm on Sunday.

The ticket price for adults is $5 while child under 10 will be free.
