THE Navua Women’s football team will enter the 2022 Digicel Women Inter District Championship as underdogs say, coach Rakesh Kumar.
“We are preparing well for our debut in the tournament and the morale is high in the camp,” said Kumar.
“This is the first time we are taking part in the IDC and the girls are so excited and looking forward to the start of the tournament.”
Kumar said they would take the tournament as the build-up for next season.
“It’s a proud moment for our girls as they will be rubbing their shoulders against some of the best players in the country and it will be a huge exposure for them.”
“We failed to qualify for the Digicel Women’s Super League after going down against Nadi in the play-off but this tournament will give us the opportunity to learn and prepare better for next season,” said Kumar
He said he would bank on his young players.
“We have a mixture of young and experienced players and I know they will do their best in the tournament,”
“We have been working on fitness and technical aspects,” Kumar said.
Kumar said they were drawn in a tough pool but would take each game as it comes.
“We will play Nadroga, Rewa, and Labasa and we know they are experienced teams but I have been reminding my players to focus on our game plans. They are a team and we are a team so we need to be focused and take each game as it comes,” said Kumar.
“Our aim is to reach the semi-finals,” Kumar said.
Navua opens its campaign against Nadroga on Friday 18 November at 11.30 am and plays Rewa on Saturday, November 19 at 1.30 pm and their final group match is up against Labasa on Sunday at 1.30 pm.
The group stages of the 2022 Digicel Women’s IDC will be played at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori from 18-20 November and the semi-finals and final will be held at Prince Charles Park in Nadi next weekend.
