The Navua football side came from behind to register its first win in the Vodafone Premier League beating Nasinu 3-2 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori last Sunday.
Navua captain Vineet Chand was the hero for the side when he scored a late winner in the dying stages of the match to give the Anaconda Town Boy’s a much needed three points.
Nasinu looked favorites in the match but the Mohammed Shafil coached Navua side proved the critics wrong with their brave performance.
Both teams took the break in a nil-all draw at half-time.
The second half saw Nasinu getting the lead in the 60th minute with the boots of Nasoni Mereke while ten minutes later Navua replied with a powerful header by defender Simione Damuni to bring the scoreline to one-all.
Solomon Island import Marlon Tahion further extended Nasinu’s lead in the 78th minute after netting the side’s second goal.
An own goal by Leone Damudamu in the 90th minute saw Navua leveling scores before Chand sealed the winner in the 92nd minute to give his side the first three points.
Shafil was over the cloud after the final whistle.
“Firstly I thanked the Man above for giving us the strength and spirit to last 90minutes in the matches and I am really impressed with the team,” he said.
Shafil, who was away from the sideline for the Navua due to work commitments brought back the winning form for the Anaconda Town Boys.
“The boys really worked hard till the final whistle which we were lacking in the others games so we managed to get the three points,” said Shafil
He said the win has given their hope alive to compete in the top level.
“We hope to continue with the winning streak as we go into the second round as our aim is to stay back in the Premier division,” Shafil said.
Nasinu coach Tagi Vonolagi was disappointed with the result.
“That’s unexpected but that all in the game and I salute the Navua team to fought back in the game and earning the three points.”
Vonolagi said there were some players caring injury as well the fitness was the weakness in his side.
“A lot players were caring injuries which was our downfall and the boy’s didn’t followed simple instructions which gave Navua the opportunity to score goals,” said the former Nasinu rep.
Vonolagi said they would regroup and come back firing in the second round.
Nasinu has seven points after playing seven matches and is second last on the points table while Navua is on the bottom of the standings with four points after the end of first round.
