Nasau propels Ba Women’s Back-to-Back Championship Wins

In a dazzling display of talent and determination, Cema Nasau led Ba Women’s Football Team to their second consecutive Digicel Women’s Inter District Championship title. The delayed 2023 tournament wrapped up this afternoon at the Fiji Football Academy Grounds in Vatuwaqa, with Ba securing a decisive 4-1 victory over Labasa Women’s FC.

Labasa initially broke the deadlock in the second half with Narieta Leba converting a penalty, putting pressure on the defending champions. However, it was Cema Nasau who rose to the occasion, demonstrating why she was named the tournament’s best player. Just minutes after Labasa’s goal, Nasau equalized with a powerful strike that left spectators in awe just outside the 18-yard line.

Her moment of brilliance came shortly after, when she executed an acrobatic bicycle kick, a move that not only put Ba ahead but also highlighted her exceptional skills and athleticism. This stunning goal electrified the crowd and cemented her status as a key player in Fijian women’s football.

National men’s captain Roy Krishna praised Nasau’s skills saying she has the skills and ability to play for a professional club.

“She is technically very good and a smart footballer. She reads the game very well. She knows when to press and attack as well as when to slow the pace down. Her goals were brilliant both her instinctive reaction for the first goal and her bicycle kick showcased her precision and composure under pressure.”

The young and promising talent of 15-year-old Elesi Tabunase further extended Ba’s advantage with a well-executed goal. The victory was sealed by Ba Captain and national women’s team representative Luisa Tamanitoakula, who delivered a powerful shot in the box, marking Ba’s fourth goal of the match.

Despite the loss, Labasa’s captain Sofi Diyalowai earned the golden boot award for her impressive tally of 10 goals throughout the tournament. Ba’s Mereseini Waqali was recognized with the golden glove award for her outstanding goalkeeping.

Nasau’s outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned her the prestigious golden ball award. The team’s collective effort also saw them win the fair play award, avoiding any cards during the tournament—a testament to their disciplined and respectful play.
