The countdown has begun for one of Fiji’s most anticipated football tournaments — the Extra Battle of the Giants (BOG) — and all eyes are on Stratum Construction Nadi FC as they prepare to break a nearly three-decade title drought.
It’s been 29 long years since the Jetsetters last hoisted the BOG trophy in 1996, when they triumphed over Tavua 3-1 at the historic Govind Park in Ba. Nadi’s proud history includes five BOG titles and five runner-up finishes, making them one of the competition’s most storied clubs. But the years since their last title have been a winding road of near misses, rebuilding, and evolution.
This season marks a new chapter, as Canadian coach Raj Dayal steps in to helm the squad again. With a reputation for tactical sharpness and a deep understanding of modern football dynamics, Dayal’s influence is already being felt. He is joined by former Nadi and national rep Villiame Toma, who brings invaluable experience and leadership to the technical bench.
Anchoring the defense is the fearless Joeli Buivanua, whose reflex saves have often been the difference between victory and defeat. The team boasts a refreshing mix of seasoned campaigners and young talents. The next generation of Jetsetters — Vinayak Rao, Tuiba Batiratu, Mohammed Ayman, Alfraz Ali, Shivam Shandil, William Khan, and Nikash Prasad — offer flair, pace, and hunger for glory.
This balanced blend of youth and maturity is the bedrock of Nadi’s hopes this year. Their unpredictability — sometimes frustrating in league play, but often thrilling in tournaments — makes them a team no one takes lightly.
Nadi FC faces a tough challenge in Pool A, drawn against three formidable sides — Suva, Rewa, and Navua. The Jetsetters open their campaign against Suva on Friday, August 1 at noon, followed by a critical clash with Rewa on Saturday at 1 PM, and then wrap up the group stage against Navua on Sunday at 10 AM.
