Lautoka FC Sets Sights on Consecutive Battle of the Giants Titles

As the 2025 Extra Battle of the Giants tournament commences this weekend, defending champions Lautoka FC enter the competition with high expectations and a clear objective: to secure their third BOG title and, for the first time in their history, become back-to-back champions.

The Sugar City Boys approach the tournament riding a wave of momentum following crucial Extra Premier League victories over heavyweights Labasa FC and Tavua FC. These wins have provided a timely confidence boost for a side eager to reaffirm its position among the elite of Fijian football.

Lautoka’s history in the Battle of the Giants includes two titles: their first in 1985, with a commanding 3–0 victory over Rewa in Suva, and their most recent in 2024, when they defeated Nadi 2–0 at HFC Bank Stadium. In addition to these triumphs, the Blues have finished as runners-up on eight occasions—a testament to their consistency and resilience over the years.

Led by a blend of seasoned campaigners and promising young talent, Lautoka FC’s 2025 squad demonstrates the depth and versatility required to succeed in high-pressure tournament play. Among the key players are: Zibraz Sahib, the engine in midfield; Mohammed Shazil Ali and Muni Shivam Naidu, offering creativity and control; Ilmotama Jese and Simione Nabenu, anchoring the defense; and Shiva Pillay and Edward Eron, providing width and attacking flair.

Grouped in a competitive Group A alongside Labasa FC, Dayals Sawmillers Ba FC, and Nadroga FC, Lautoka’s path to the semifinals will be anything but straightforward. Their campaign opens against Nadroga on Friday, August 1, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a clash with Ba on Saturday at 3:00 p.m., and culminating in a highly anticipated encounter with hosts Labasa on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.

With a proud legacy, recent success, and a squad brimming with ambition, Lautoka FC appears well-positioned to make a serious push for another title. While the journey begins at Subrail Park, the destination could well be another piece of silverware for the Blues.
