Labasa Football Club president Rayaz Khan is happy with a significant boost for the Labasa Women team in their preparation for the inaugural OFC Women’s Champions League with a $10,000 contribution from Fiji Football and Digicel Fiji.
Khan said there has been a lot said on social media regarding the sponsorship.
“Let me clear the air that we are happy with the support given by Fiji FA as this sponsorship is for our preparation for the tournament only,” said Khan
“Our team is fully covered with all expenses for the tournament which includes airfares, accommodation, meals, and other expenses.
Khan said fans are comparing the sponsorship with Suva FC.
“Suva FC received more because they have to cater for all their expenses like accommodation, meals and traveling during the OFC Champions League participation whereas we are fully catered,” said Khan
With the support of Fiji Football and Digicel Fiji, the team is now in a better position to focus on their training and preparation for the tournament.
“We are grateful for the support from Fiji Football and are determined to do our best at the OFC Women’s Champions League,” said Khan.
“Our players have been working hard and are eager to showcase their skills on the international stage.”
The OFC Women’s Champions League kicks off on June 1 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where eight teams from the Oceania region will compete for the title. The Labasa Women’s team is looking forward to the challenge and hopes to make history by becoming the first Fijian team to win the tournament.
The Labasa Women’s team has been placed in Group A alongside New Caledonian’s AS Academy Feminine and Samoa’s Kiwi FC. In Group B, hosts Hekari FC of Papua New Guinea will compete against New Zealand’s Eastern Suburb AFC and Koloale FC of the Solomon Islands.
The team will leave the country at the end of this month.
