Labasa women closes in on semi-finals

Narieta Leba’s impressive first-half brace for Labasa Women FC secured a crucial victory at the OFC Women’s Champions League, intensifying the competition in Group B for the upcoming weekend’s finale.

Following AS Academy Féminine’s defeat to Auckland United earlier in the day, both Labasa and Veitongo knew that only a win would keep their semi-final hopes alive, with a loss spelling an early exit from the tournament.

Labasa initially struggled to find their rhythm, but as the game progressed, they began to assert themselves. In the 24th minute, Anaismeci Volitikoro’s shot tested Veitongo’s goalkeeper, Madison Tenifa, with Sonia Alfred unable to convert the rebound.

However, Labasa broke the deadlock a minute later when Shayal Sindhika’s through ball found Narieta Leba, who calmly rounded Tenifa to slot the ball into the net.

Veitongo attempted to respond quickly, but Ana Polovili’s effort was thwarted by Labasa’s resilient defense.

Just before halftime, Leba struck again, evading Ana Lauteau’s challenge to fire a low shot past Tenifa and double Labasa’s lead.

Veitongo struggled to threaten in the second half, with Labasa’s defense containing their attacks effectively. Although Veitongo had a chance through Tamaa Faletau, Malia Masalu’s shot went wide.

Labasa, aware of the importance of goal difference, continued to press for more goals, with Unaisi Tuberi coming close with a powerful half-volley that narrowly missed the target.

Despite Labasa’s late surge, Veitongo, led by Tenifa’s impressive goalkeeping, held firm.

With Labasa and Auckland United tied on four points each, and AS Academy Féminine trailing with three points, Labasa’s victory has set up a thrilling final group game against the reigning champions. The outcome of this match will determine which team progresses to the knockout stages of the tournament.
