The Liverpool and Socceroos Legend Harnold Kewell, popular in the football arena as Harry Kewell, will be the guest speaker at the upcoming Vodafone/Fiji FA Awards night in Suva next month.
This was confirmed by the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) president Rajesh Patel at a press conference in Ba yesterday.
“Finally we have received the confirmation that former Liverpool and Socceroos legend, Harry Kewell will be the guest speaker at the awards night,” Patel said.
“We are glad that both Harry and FIFA has accepted our request.
“This is definitely a good news to the soccer loving fans in Fiji.
“It will be held in Suva as we are just finalizing the venue.”
The highlight of his career was scoring a goal against Croatia which took Australia through to the knockout stages of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the second World Cup for Socceroos.
Kewell played for Leeds United, Liverpool, Galatasaray, Melbourne Victory, Al-Gharafa and Melbourne Heart.
For his international career, he has received 58 caps, and scored 17 goals, while playing for the Australian national team.
Kewell has represented Australia at the 1995 FIFA U-17 World Championship, the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Australia finished runners-up, the 2004 OFC Nations Cup, which Australia claimed for the fourth time, the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 2007 AFC Asian Cup, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, where Australia finished runners-up.
Meanwhile, president Patel also announced a new category at the awards night.
“We are also introducing the Women’s Coach of the year category for the first time.
“It has always been just one category which was dominated by the male coaches but now we are categorizing it as the coach of the year for male and female separately.
“Definitely it will be an exciting night so I urge the soccer loving fans to purchase your tickets in advance.”
The Vodafone/Fiji FA awards night for season 2019 is scheduled to be held on March 14.
