History at the BOG

History was created last Sunday at Churchill Park in Lautoka when Labasa and Rewa featured in the final of the 2022 Punjas Battle of the Giants Tournament.

It was after 44 years the Babasiga Lions and Delta Tigers played in a BOG final since its inception in 1978.

Fiji FA Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Yusuf congratulated Labasa on the win.

“Congratulations to the Babasiqa Lions for the victory and well-played final,” said Yusuf

“It was an exciting and thrilling final as both teams displayed constructive football.”

“Nothing can be taken away from Rewa as they also fought hard to defend their title,”

“There is only one winner and once again congratulation to Labasa for winning the 2022 Punjas BOG,”

Yusuf said the tournament was a major success.

“We are happy with the performance of all teams during the 2022 Punjas Battle of the Giants tournament,” said Yusuf

“From the group stages to the final it was entertaining fixtures,”

“I am sure the football fans really enjoyed the football fiesta in Lautoka,”

“I would like to thank each and everyone for their support in making the 2022 Punjas BOG a success,” said Yusuf

Rewa advanced to the finals after beating favorites All in One Builders Nadi FC 1-0 in the first semi-final with a classic goal from striker Setariki Hughes while Labasa defeated Ba 2-0 with goals from Christopher Wasasala and Edwin Sahayam.

In the final Labasa scored in the first minute through Ashnil Raju after a blunder by Rewa’s defence.

Rewa’s equaliser was done by replacement Tevita Warainivalu in the 77th minute.

The match was forced into extra time and replacement striker France Catarogo scored the winner just a few minutes before the first half of extra time ended.

Labasa walked away with $17000 in prizemoney while Rewa received $5000.
