Hero arrives home

Fijian wonder-boy Roy Krishna is back into the country after spending a successful season with ATK in Kolkata in the Indian Super League.

Sharing his thoughts about being the captain of a winning club overseas, Krishna said it’s absolutely amazing.

“It’s absolutely amazing being the captain of a club overseas in a country like India and winning the finals,” he said.

“It is my first time winning the finals as a captain so its extra special considering it’s also my first year in India.

“For the club to consider someone who’s not from a big football nation worthy to lead the team was a big responsibility so I did my best throughout the season to win.

“It was a challenging season especially since it was my first time there and in a new league.”

The Vodafone National team captain said he was happy to be back home.

He arrived into the country with his wife Naziah Ali-Krishna and both went straightaway into self-isolation.

“I’m happy to be back in Fiji and I’m looking forward to home cooked food especially fish in lolo and cassava prepared by my in laws.

“After my 14 days self quarantine, I’m looking forward to spending some time with my family and friends.

“I’m also looking forward to meeting with my well wishees who have been on this journey with me. Since I left to India in August last year I’ve received so much love from everyone and i feel so blessed to have them cheering me on from home.”

Krishna said his challenging journey was made comfort from the everlasting support from his family and fans back home.

He said playing in front of a jam-packed 50,000 spectators in the semifinal was a dream come true for him.

“It’s challenging being away from home but i take so much comfort in the fact that in my home country, people often wakes up early to follow my matches live and send me words of encouragement and well wishes for every single game.

“I’ve had people from Fiji apart from my family also turn up to watch me play in India and it has been such blessing for me. I get a lot of encouragement from everyone back home so the win felt like our all collective win.

“It was always my dream to play in a big stadiums so playing infront of over 50,000 people in last week’s semi-final as captain in Kolkata felt like that dream came true.

“Last week we had to play the finals behind closed doors due to the Coronavirus scare but the virtual love and encouragement from the fans including the Indian supporters and especially the Fijian fans from around the world made this win even more memorable.

Straight after a hectic season in the Indian Super League, Krishna once again answered the national duty calls and was supposed to join the national team in preparation for the Tri-Nations FIFA International friendlies, however all football activities including the Tri-nations have been postponed.

“I was meant to join the national camp but the tri nations has been deferred to a later date.

“I am looking forward to meeting the coach and hopefully I get to see him after my 14 days of self quarantine.”
