Perennial football underdogs Nasinu will be out to upset a few giants at the 2020 Punjas Battle of the Giants Tournament in Lautoka.
They are no strangers to challenges, and their pool sees them up against the likes of defending champions Labasa, traditional giants Ba and a Suva side that is undefeated in 2020.
Always admired for their passion and tenacity, Nasinu won hearts at last year’s BOG when they progressed through to the semi-finals, before losing 0-3 to eventual winners Labasa.
They are only team in Fiji to have never won the BOG title, although they did feature in two finals (1989 and 1991).
Coached by former Nasinu great and national goalkeeper Tagi Vonolagi, they will be out to prove they are no pushovers after a series of courageous performances in recent VPL matches.
Nasinu’s ‘guts and determination’ approach is always on show. They lack proper training facilities, and sponsorship and resources are always constrained. Despite this, they play with heart every single time.
They do have some experienced players like Leone Damudamu, Joseph Mishra. Nasoni Mereke, Asaeli Tuinidau, Sekove Naivakananumi, Noa Seru, Tomasi Uculoa, Jone Naraba, Isikeli Ratucava, Luke Savu, Semi Vakatalai and Jashnit Vikash. In goal, they will rely on the skills of upcoming goalkeepers Viliame Rakuro and Meli Bavatu.
The Go Fry sponsored side face Ba on Friday August 07 at 4pm. They play neighbors Suva on Day two at 11am and their last pool match will be against Labasa on Sunday at 10am.
Football fans may yet be surprised by the scalps the Giant Killers will collect at the 2020 Punjas BOG.
