Fiji upbeat about new tournament

The Fiji Football Association’s new competition Women’s Super-Six League will no doubt going to be very competitive and entertaining when the competition kicks at the end of this month.

Fiji FA competitions manager Amitesh said the women’s football in the country was going big.

“We have planned to start a new competition like we have for men we will also have two tier competition for women, “said Pal

Pal said in the premier division we will have six teams and in the senior division there will be 12 teams.

“For women we have super six league which is like a professional league,” said Pal

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said the Women’s Super-Six League was a new product of Fiji Football.

“Yes this Super Six League for women is a new product for Fiji FA and will be played home and away just like the Vodafone Premier League, “said Yusuf

Yusuf said some of the matches would be played as curtain raiser for Vodafone Premier League.

“Some of the matches will be played as curtain raiser for VPL and the girls can play in front of huge crowd.”

“Labasa is also part of this so the Viti Levu teams will have opportunities to travel to north and play likewise Labasa women team will travel in Viti Levu and this will give the girls more opportunities to showcase their talents,”

Yusuf said this was a big step up for women’s football in the country.

“It not only for the players but also for the coaches, officials and whole admin staff because it will not be like when they used to collect the players and play, “said Yusuf

“This will need lot of preparation and commitment from everyone,”

He said this was a fully funded competition by Fiji Football.

“Fiji FA is going to fund for everything like coaches allowance, traveling grant, match day meals, boots, jerseys, balls and all other equipment to the top six districts,”

Yusuf added that this was big year for women’s football.

“It’s a big year for us as OFC wants to hold the Nations Cup in January next year and this competition will give our coaches to scout the best players for the national team as well,”

“We need everyone’s commitment, we need structure and things all organized the districts,”

He said Fiji FA was doing everything to assist the six teams.

“Our national women’s head coach Marika Rodu is having sessions with the six teams making sure they all have the same playing philosophy.

Rodu, says the pressure is now on the teams to need to prove themselves to maintain their spot.

“The new concept will bring more responsibility in terms of the teams and officials. They will feel more included in terms of the competition. And it is a step forward to the national league.” Said Rodu

The Fiji FA Women’s Super League will be launched this Saturday at Sofitel in Nadi.
