Fiji beats Solomon Islands in International Friendly

The Digicel Fiji Bula Boys secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Solomon Islands in the first match of the FIFA International Tri-Nations Friendly at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Monday night.

The decisive goal was scored by midfielder Tevita Warainivalu, who confidently converted a penalty in the 81st minute. The penalty was awarded after defender Atonio Tuivuna, who had ventured forward in an attacking role, was brought down by the Solomon Islands goalkeeper.

The match was an exciting and fast-paced encounter, with both teams delivering an entertaining display of football that thrilled the fans in attendance.

Striker Sairusi Nalaubu and Thomas Dunn looked particularly dangerous for the Bula Boys, consistently threatening the Solomon Islands’ defense. On the other side, Bobby Leslie and captain Micah Lea’alafa created several good chances for the visitors but were well-contained by Fiji’s defense, led by goalkeeper Akuila Mataisuva.

Fiji’s head coach, Rob Sherman, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, acknowledging the close nature of the game.

“It was a close game, in fairness, against tough opposition, which is exactly what we need. We’ll face them again in about a month, so that should be interesting,” said Sherman.

He also praised his players for sticking to the game plan despite challenging ground conditions.

“The boys played according to our game plan in difficult conditions.

“We couldn’t play the way we wanted because of the ground, but they showed great character, and I am proud of them,” Sherman added.

Fiji will play Hong Kong-China on Sunday, September 8 at Churchill Park in Lautoka at 3pm while the Solomon Islands will take on Hong Kong-China on Thursday, September 5 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva at 7pm.
