Bula Boys beat Tahiti, tops Group B

The Digicel Fiji Bula Boys secured a victory over Tahiti, finishing their group stage campaign at the OFC Men’s Nations Cup 2024 with a win that confirmed both teams’ advancement to the semi-finals in Vanuatu next week. Roy Krishna’s penalty, his third in two matches, was pivotal in this scrappy win for Rob Sherman’s side.

Fiji will now play Vanuatu in their semi-final in Port Vila on Thursday, while Tahiti will face defending champions and favorites New Zealand on the same day.

Samuel Garcia’s Tahiti side had a strong start, with captain Teaonui Tehau being influential throughout the first half. Despite chances from Shawn Tinirauarii and Taumihau Shan, they couldn’t convert them into goals against Fiji’s goalkeeper Isikeli Sevanaia. The game’s breakthrough came within the first half-hour when Tahiti’s goalkeeper Teave Teamotuaitau conceded a penalty by rushing out and fouling Sairusi Nalaubu. Krishna confidently converted the penalty, mirroring his performance against Samoa.

Tahiti continued to search for an equalizer with Tehau creating opportunities, including one for Tauhiti Keck that went over the bar. Matéo Degrumelle later forced a remarkable save from Sevanaia, preserving Fiji’s lead. Fiji almost extended their lead due to an error by Pothin Poma, but Teamotuaitau managed to prevent an own goal. Despite their efforts, Tahiti couldn’t break through Fiji’s defense.

With this victory, Fiji tops Group B and prepares to face Vanuatu, while Tahiti will regroup to challenge New Zealand in the semi-finals.
