Blues crowned champions

Flick Hygiene Lautoka FC’s triumph in the Rooster Chicken/Scoops Ice Cream Battle of the Giants Tournament was well-earned, as they secured a 2-0 victory over Smart Security/Calgary Nadi FC in the final at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

The final was a tense and competitive match, with both teams launching early attacks. Nadi’s goalkeeper, Joela Buivanua, delivered an impressive performance, making several crucial saves in the first half to keep his team in the game. However, Lautoka’s coach, Shivam Raj, adjusted the team’s tactics in the second half, emphasizing a more attacking approach.

The turning point came in the 64th minute when Lautoka’s striker Saula Waqa was fouled in the box by Nadi defender Ilmotama Jese during an aerial battle. The referee, Veer Singh, awarded a penalty, and Waqa confidently converted the spot kick, putting Lautoka ahead. The Blues’ experienced defense, including players like Ilmotama Jese, Antonia Tuivuna, Sakaraia Naisua, and Epeli Leiroti, played a crucial role in holding off Nadi’s attacks.

Lautoka sealed the victory in the 80th minute when star striker Sairusi Nalaubu received a through pass from Leiroti and finished with precision past Buivanua. The win not only secured the championship but also earned Lautoka a $17,000 prize, while Nadi received $5,000 for their efforts. It was a well-fought and deserved victory for the Blues.
