Battle for district pride set to roll

The stage is all set for the five days of entertaining football as our women in football will lace up their boots to feature in the 2020 Vodafone Women’s Inter District Championship at ANZ Stadium in Suva this week.

The pools were drawn earlier this month which has Suva, Rewa, Nasinu and Nadroga in Group A while Group B is made up of defending champions Ba, last year’s runner-up Labasa, southern champions Tailevu Naitasiri and Nadi.

Fiji Football Association women’s vice president Susan Wise says this year’s tournament will be interesting and exciting.

“There will be thrilling matches as all eight teams have prepared well for the tournament.”

“All teams are equally good as they have qualified on merit. They all have done well in their respective zones, “said Wise

Wise says the tournament is getting bigger and better every year.

“There are huge interest in women’s football and it is growing massively which makes the tournament bigger and better every year,”

Wise said that pool matches will be played from today Wednesday October 28 to Friday October 30. On Saturday October 31 will be a break for women’s strategic planning workshop and the semi-finals will be played on Sunday November 1 and the final on Monday November 2.

“The winner of the 2020 Vodafone women’s IDC will walk away with $4000 while the runner-up gets $1500,”said Wise

Suva and Nasinu will kick start the tournament at midday today followed by Lincoln Rewa vs Lomawai Kava Supplies Nadroga match at 2pm. Defending champions Ba will take on Best Fish & Chips Nadi at 4pm while the official opening by the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa will be held at 6pm. The final match of day one will see southern champions Tailevu Naitasiri face last year’s finalist Safetech Electrical Services Labasa at 6.30pm.

Rewa and Nasinu will open day two of the tournament at midday on Thursday followed by Ba vs Tailevu Naitasiri match at 2pm.Host Suva will clash Nadroga at 4pm while Labasa and Nadi will wrap up the day at 6pm.

The final pool matches will be played on Friday October 30 will see the repeat of last year’s final between Ba and Labasa at midday followed by Suva vs Rewa match at 2pm while Nadroga and Nasinu will battle at 4pm.Tailevu Naitasiri and Nadi will conclude the pool matches at 6pm.

On Sunday November 1st at 11am winner group A will face runner-up group B in the first semi-final while at 1pm winner group B will challenge runner-up Group A.

The final will be played on Monday November 2 at 2pm after the third/fourth place play-off between the losing semi-finalists.

The ticket price is $5 for adult and child U12 is free.
